What do you get when you combine Thomas Ligotti, a writer of some of the best weird fiction you'll ever read, with David Tibet, leader of the experimental music group Current 93? Something disturbing, unsettling, unique, and odd. In this recording, Tibet reads Ligotti's poem "I Have a Special Plan For This World" and adds a foreboding soundtrack that takes this piece to strange and spectacular heights. I remember seeing an ad for this CD in a magazine in 2000 or 2001, and I'm kicking myself for never ordering it. It's no longer in print, but sometimes copies become available online if you look for them. If you've never read Ligotti, here are some suggestions to get you started:
Fiction
Nonfiction
Ligotti's work revolves mainly around pessimistic, nihilistic, and antinatalist themes. He's not for everyone, and if you're looking for anything remotely uplifting, he isn't for you. I'm a fan, but I can't profess to be an expert on his work. One thing for sure: His writings have an eerie way of leaving me dispirited yet inspired.
As for Current 93, it's an even more acquired taste than Ligotti. Uncanny, abstract, and bizarre might be the best ways to describe Tibet's musical palette. Much of his music is out of print, but he has many (if not all) available for digital download.
If you're like me and have a curious compulsion for things dark and dismaying, give this a listen. It may open up new nightmarish doorways for you ...
